With predictions that schools will only have half the number of newly qualified teachers they need within the next year, Thames Primary SCITT have launched a ground-breaking new initiative and are appealing to local businesses to step forward and sponsor a trainee primary teacher.
In this area we are facing an unprecedented recruitment crisis which could be potentially catastrophic. There are more children in our playgrounds than ever before and that means we need more teachers in our classrooms.
At the same time, however, many outstanding potential new teachers are not able to train because they lack the necessary funds. This year, teacher training colleges are now only allowed to recruit students who can support themselves or find funding elsewhere due to current government policy, and so, as a result, we are turning away as many as 8-10 good applicants a week.
This is why we are urging local businesses to consider sponsoring a trainee primary teacher. A bursary of between £3,000 and £9,000 can make the difference as to whether a new teacher can afford to train or not.”
