Making an impact in EYFS: Science as an enabling environment for early literacy skills

Science in EYFS is all about ‘Understanding the World’.  Discover how it provides a rich context full of awe, wonder and curiosity where children can develop valuable skills of literacy, language and communication.  Develop your understanding of how adult interactions and stimulating environments impact on children’s learning and consider how to embed the aims of the new EYFS Framework into this area of the curriculum.

RP028

Making an impact in EYFS: A science subject leaders’ guide to developing good practice

A good understanding of how children learn science in the Early Years Foundation Stage is imperative for a primary science subject leader.  Engaging with the new EYFS framework will help develop understanding of the way teachers work in EYFS and exploration of the non-statutory guidance will further build a picture of the ways young children learn.  You will consider what good teaching and learning looks like in ‘Understanding the World’ and develop a clear progression map into Key Stage 1 that will help build strong foundations for science across the school. You will return to school with a wealth of ideas to share with EYFS colleagues, ensuring that children, in this important phase, start off with the very best learning experiences.

RP029

Making an impact in EYFS: Using the outdoors to promote ‘Understanding of the World’

Taking learning outdoors has many benefits and a positive impact on children’s wellbeing.  To really ‘Understand the World’ around them, children need to be immersed in the wonders of the great outdoors and engage in a range of activities which promote the characteristics of effective learning.   Identify ways to develop your outdoor environment to increase learning opportunities in the physical and natural world and consider how this context can be a stimulus for the development of children’s mathematical, language and communication skills.
